Why HR should be on the agenda:

HR/ HCM and Payroll transformation journeys are often associated with technology initiatives. During the late 1990’s and early 2000’s there were many on-premise HCM technology initiatives undertaken. As the cloud journey began over these last several years many of you have been thinking of embarking on that journey. As the overall enterprise-wide cloud planning initiative intensifies HCM and Payroll invariably are part of that discussion. Typical questions that are raised in planning include:

  • Should HR/Payroll transformation occur at the same time as Finance?
  • Is this a good time to outsource our payroll?
  • Should we first undertake simplification of business processes?
  • Is single software vendor still the best strategy for enterprise software products?
  • What should the integration platform strategy be?

IT planning process becomes complicated with these and similar other questions. Let us focus on SAP landscape and discuss the potential options for HCM and Payroll. There are three options to look at:

Option 1- Do nothing– Since on-premise SAP HCM and Payroll support is available until 2027, you can continue “as-is” for a few more years. However, remember that transformation projects need long run ways and time lines. As a result, the decision cannot be postponed until 2027 but needs to be back in discussion in another 1.5-2.0 years. Therefore, you do not have four years, but only half of that time. Some of the implementations are also investing in the existing HCM, Payroll implementation by leveraging Fiori, Payroll Control Center and few other such functionalities.

Option 2- Focus on HR– Transitioning SAP HCM to SuccessFactors Employee Central is a viable option that many are leveraging. It helps you  start your cloud HR journey as well as the transformation of core HR. SuccessFactors also offers an option to do “talent first” which means, you can implement talent modules such as Recruitment, Performance Management and Career Planning before embarking on Core HR Employee Central module.

Option 3- Do everything– Unlike Option 1 and 2 above, in this option we tackle everything – HR, Talent and Payroll. This will be a larger transformational initiative requiring deeper commitment from both IT and business.
